... again having to wrestle with cables to connect electronic devices. With Bluetooth* wireless technology, these feats, and many more, will soon become routine ... Say hello to Bluetooth wireless technology - The technology that propels you into a new dimension in wireless connectivity.

About the Bluetooth wireless technology

The Bluetooth wireless technology is an open specification for a small-form-factor, low-cost, personal area network connection among mobile computers, mobile phones and other devices.
The Bluetooth wireless technology specification provides secure, radio-based transmission of data and voice. It delivers opportunities for rapid, ad hoc, automatic, wireless connections, even when devices are not within the line of sight. The Bluetooth wireless technology uses a globally available frequency range to ensure interoperability no matter where you travel.
The Bluetooth wireless technology was developed by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group, which was founded in 1998 to define an industry-wide specification for connecting personal and business mobile devices. More than 14000 companies are now members of the Special Interest Group, signifying the industry’s unprecedented acceptance of the Bluetooth wireless technology.

Scope of the Bluetooth wireless technology

In the past decade, mobile computing and communications devices have become essential productivity tools. The popularity of these devices has risen as their cost – and their sizes – have diminished. It is now routine for business travelers to carry mobile computers, mobile phones and personal data assistants.

 Few Usage Examples

1. The three-in-one phone

At home, your phone functions as a portable phone (fixed line charge). When you're on the move, it functions as a mobile phone (cellular charge). And when your phone comes within range of another mobile phone with built-in Bluetooth wireless technology it functions as a walkie talkie (no telephony charge).

2. The Internet bridge

Use your mobile computer to surf the Internet wherever your are, and regardless if you're cordlessly connected through a mobile phone (cellular) or through a wire-bound connection (e.g. PSTN, ISDN, LAN, xDSL).

3. The interactive conference

In meetings and conferences you can transfer selected documents instantly with selected participants, and exchange electronic business cards automatically, without any wired connections.

4. The ultimate headset

Connect your wireless headset to your mobile phone, moblie computer or any wired connection to keep your hands free for more important tasks when you're at the office or in your car.

5. The automatic synchronizer

Automatic synchronization of your desktop, mobile computer, notebook (PC-PDA and PC-HPC) and your mobile phone. For instance, as soon as you enter your office the address list and calendar in your notebook will automatically be updated to agree with the one in your desktop, or vice versa.

FAQ
1. Why not simply build phones into mobile PCs?

The cost is too high. There are many different phone standards to choose from. There is no standard that is universally available around the world. The usage model for mobile PCs does not match that of phones.

2. What will Bluetooth wireless technology deliver to end users?

It will enable users to connect a wide range of computing and telecommunications devices easily and simply, without the need to buy, carry, or connect cables. It delivers opportunities for rapid ad hoc connections, and the possibility of automatic, unconscious, connections between devices. It will virtually eliminate the need to purchase additional or proprietary cabling to connect individual devices. Because Bluetooth wireless technology can be used for a variety of purposes, it will also potentially replace multiple cable connections via a single radio link. It creates the possibility of using mobile data in a different way, for different applications such as "Surfing on the sofa", "The instant postcard", "Three in one phone" and many others. It will allow them to think about what they are working on, rather than how to make their technology work.
